I must have counseled thousands of people during my pastorate, each one of them broken in some way--
domestic violence
addiction
sexual abuse
poverty
emotional pain
physical pain
grief
neglect
sexual identity issues
fears, phobias
mental illness
isolation
but each set of eyes that I looked into from across my desk begged for the same thing....
to be loved for who they were....
unconditionally
wholeheartedly
acknowledged
received
affirmed
noticed
I came upon this song by J.J. Heller years ago and every single time I hear it, I cry. Why? Because I can relate to those who came to me for counsel, when what they longed for was for someone to love them for who they were...It is the universal need of the human heart to be loved and accepted, just as we are....
frail
with all of our flaws exposed
and yet
still accepted
regardless of who we are
or
what we have done
or
what we will become
There is a God who loves You for You.
Not for what you have done
or
what you will become.
He will give you the LOVE that you never knew.

Just this morning I was lying in bed and thinking about who Jesus surrounded Himself with while He was on earth. It wasn't the religious leaders of the day...
His greatest commandment to us is to love, not bash, hate or ignore but love EVERYONE.
